Saint Charbel`s life in stages
Biography
Saint Sharbel Makhlouf, monk of the Lebanese Maronite Order (OLM)
O Lord, you inspired Saint Sharbel to live and die in the path of Jesus Christ.
You taught him how to live his monastic vows with perfection, in absolute silence, conforming his life to yours.
O mighty God, you spread the power of Saint Sharbel’s intercession through his multiple miracles and marvels.
Grant us the grace to love you and serve you as he did,
and grant us, through his intercession,
the petitions that we hold in the silence of our hearts.
Yousef Antoun Makhlouf was born on May 8, 1828, in the village of Bkaakafra (North Lebanon). He grew up in a religiously committed family and was raised in the Christian faith. He was inspired by the ascetic and monastic form of life practiced by the solitary hermits of the monastery of Saint Anthony-Kozhaya of the Lebanese Maronite Order, and early on in his life, desired to become a monk. He frequently withdrew to a grotto dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray and meditate. Villagers in Bkaakafra called him the “saint” for his piety, unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, and exemplary devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In many respects, the grotto became his first hermitage and altar of worship.
In 1851 Yousef joined the Lebanese Maronite Order, choosing the name Sharbel. After two years of intense academic and spiritual formation, Sharbel took his religious vows of obedience, poverty and chastity on November 1, 1853 at Saint Maron’s monastery in the village of Annaya (Mount Lebanon). Having completed theological studies under many teachers including Saint Neematallah Hardini, Saint Sharbel was ordained a priest on July 23, 1859. He was single-minded in his pursuit of spiritual perfection.
Having spent 16 years as a monk in the community of the monastery of Annaya, Saint Sharbel formally requested to become a hermit. The “miracle of the lamp”, which gave light though filled only with water, convinced Saint Sharbel’s superiors that his request was truly of divine origin. On February 15, 1875, Saint Sharbel entered the hermitage of Saints Peter and Paul affiliated with the monastery of Saint Maron in Annaya, where he consecrated himself to a life of prayer, worship and manual labor.
Having spent 23 years in the hermitage, Saint Sharbel went to eternal rest in the Lord on Christmas Eve (December 24), 1898. Several months after his burial, light shone from his tomb. Upon the approval of Church authorities, Saint Sharbel’s body was exhumed and was found to be incorruptible and further examination showed that his body transpired blood and water like any living organism.
The news of the miraculous condition of Saint Sharbel’s body spread throughout the region and many flocked to the monastery of Saint Maron in Annaya, seeking the intercession of this saint. Reports of physical and spiritual healings began to be examined by Church authorities.
On January 5, 1965, at the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council, Saint Sharbel was beatified by Pope Paul VI and was the only person to be beatified at the end of this Council. This brought great joy not only to the Lebanese Maronite Order but to the entire Catholic Church who witnessed this monumental event. Saint Sharbel was subsequently canonized by the same Pope on October 9, 1977.
Over the years, the fame of Saint Sharbel has spread throughout the entire world, with multiple healings and miracles attributed to his intercession. Many people continue to seek Saint Sharbel’s prayers for the healing of body and soul, and for the transformation of their life.

Monastery and Hermitage
History of the Monastery
In the region of Mount Lebanon of Jbeil, on a hill, which is regarded as one of the nicest hills in Lebanon, is a Monastery belonging to the Lebanese Maronite Order, known as St Maron Monastery – Annaya. It lies in Annaya to the west of Ehmej and the south of Meshmesh. It lies seventeen kilometers from Jbeil, and is 1200 meters of altitude.
Annaya in a Syriac dialect means “a hymn singer” or “a group of worshippers or hermits”. In the past, it was one of the farms of Jbeil. Its name was transformed to a monastery after the monks had bought land in that area where they constructed a monastery.
The construction of the first part of the monastery was completed in 1828, which was the year of St Charbel’s birth. Wasn’t God preparing for what was going to happen in that blessed land? Between 1838 and 1841, the church was completed and so were all the cellars.
After St Charbel had been declared Blessed in 1965, the Order started to build a new church creating facilities to receive the multitudes of believers flowing to Annaya.
In 1974, the inauguration of the new church, on the western side of the monastery which was constructed in the name of St Charbel, took place. Still to this day, the Order continuously repairs and prepares facilities for the sake of the visitors’ services and the meeting of the spiritual needs. We will be talking further about all the parts of the Monastery.
Following the way of St Charbel who combined heaven and earth, the St Maron monastery performs a distinguished agricultural activity and a variety of production such as wines, jams and dairy products.
Not only do the monks accomplish their spiritual duties inside the monastery, but they also distribute their variety of the activities and care in the vicinity, where they serve the parishes and provide them with all the necessary care.
Today, thanks to St Charbel, St Maron’s monastery in Annaya has become a great national and international shrine where thousands of believers come to pray and repent, and to provide for their various spiritual needs. It is also a place where letters from all over the world are received to get the Lebanese Saint’s tangible grace or to seek his intercession.
History of the hermitage
In 1798, a hundred years prior to St Charbel’s death, Yussef Bou Ramya and Daoud Issa Khalife from Ehmej built a monastery on the Annaya Rouasy hill. Youssef and Daoud finished constructing the monastery in 1811. They called the place of worship, which was built on old ruins, “The Lord’s Transfiguration”. Their purpose was to refrain themselves to the hermit’s life due to being fed up with the world.
On August 9th, 1812, the Maronite patriarch Youhanna El Helou changed the place of worships name from “Transfiguration” to the two apostles, Peter & Paul whose feast is on June 29th. Since then, the monastery has been known as “St Peter & Paul church” instead of the Monastery of Revelation.
During that period, there was a need for a priest to take care of the spiritual service. Therefore, Youssef and Daoud asked the order’s general superior, Father Egnatious Bleibel, on November 20th, 1814, for a priest to serve this mission. They gave him full authorization in the house of worship and its land. And that was in accordance with a decree directed by patriarch Youhanna El Helou to the General Superior.
Starting from 1814, those worshippers abandoned the site of St Peter & Paul as well as surrounding property and followed the Lebanese Maronite Monastic Order. Brother Youssef remained in St Maroun Church, Annaya till he passed away after a righteous old age.
However, the “St Peter & Paul Monastery” later became a hermitage in around 1828, the year in which the first construction was completed in St Maroun Church, Annaya, and which was the birth year of St Charbel. And the first hermit from the Order to enter this hermitage was Father Elisha El Hardini, The Blessed Nimutallah El Hardini’s brother.
Miracles
Introduction
God…
He is the Almighty behind miracles. It’s enough to think about the act of the creation which constitutes the first miracle known to man.
In the Old Testament, the event of the Exodus out of the land of slavery into the land of promise shone as a miracle that the scriptures constantly mention to prove the intervention of God, the Saviour, in the history of Man.
In the New Testament, the Gospels tell us of the miracles of Jesus, the Son of God, who walked on our land and abundantly gave love to mankind. The «Acts of the Apostles» has quoted how Jesus’ disciples performed similar miracles: they healed the sick and the lame and raised the dead. All this was achieved in the name of Jesus.
Since its beginning, the Church has acknowledged the miracle, many of which it has confirmed. It has depended on the research of the most well known doctors and the latest techniques to prove that what has happened can’t be explained by science, implying that the miracle is the work of God.
God…
He gives the grace to people who accept it. Therefore, they become saints. And through their intercession is the miracle performed. One of the saints is St Charbel. Can anyone ignore the miracles that have taken place through St Charbel, and which have been witnessed by many? Isn’t the miracle of Madam Nohad El Shami’s cure still bewildering the most prominent specialists? The contemporaneous know how she was and how she has become overnight. Can’t St Charbel be truly named the saint of the extraordinary?
The Church has confirmed two miracles for the beatification of St Charbel, and the third for canonization. This can be viewed in this part of this website. Moreover, we’ve expounded Mrs Nohad El Shami’s miracle, which is a well known contemporary miracle. News and information about the graces and miracles of St Charbel are still flowing to St Maron’s Monastery, Annaya, where his tomb lies. Most of this information deserves attention, especially because those who convey it are known for their sobriety and meticulousness. And sometimes, this information is confirmed. However, to name what’s heard as miracles, we have to obtain their confirmation from the Church. But we present it here after the approval of those concerned, for the visitor of the website to know that St Charbel is a great intercessor who knows no obstacle between him and those asking his intercession, and who develops a true relationship with them, which, many times, leads to a miracle through God’s will.
To restate a little…
A miracle is generally a blessing for healing and the like. How many tears have been shed next to St Charbel’s statue and tomb, at his church or hermitage? These are affecting scenes that touch the inner depths of those who see them. Of the many, few are the people who obtain a tangible miracle external to them and to others. Some would ask, “Why did this person obtain the miracle and the other didn’t?” “Why is it Nohad El-Shami and not other women, who suffer the same ailment?”
In the right answer to those questions did man rejoice. There is a natural path to keep matters running, and for sure, God doesn’t always phenomenally intervene in this natural path. But, at times, a miracle takes place. God changes the way things go if a saint intercedes, if something no one understands happens or if there is an oppression or a warning for repentance and so on. So man is to say that he is unable to understand God’s performance and wisdom. What we do understand is to head for God saying : Thy will be done. This proves the deep understanding of man’s existence before God and not a negative surrender of one’s self. Therefore, imposing a miracle on God is a test that the Holy Book, in its Old and New Testaments, warned of. Doesn’t the attempter say by trying to impose the miracle on Jesus, “Jump down this mountain and the angels will carry you?” Doesn’t Jesus answer him, “Don’t try your God”? Then, we should direct our hearts to God to know that he loves seeing us pray before those glorified – his saints. Let’s allow him the choice of the miracle. If we accept this logic, a miracle will surely happen. This miracle will convert us internally and offer peaceful living, which no one and nothing can take away from us. This is because it is peace coming from God.
We go back to St Charbel and his miracles. We read about them and learn that he is immensely loving in friendship towards all those who resort to him. How many friends in this world have we resorted to, asking their advice even if we have known that they can’t change our affairs? Charbel is surely a friend whom everyone would take as a shoulder to cry on. We can’t tell the time of the miracle, but his being close to us is enough. Charbel is the great and the friend. He is the miracle in itself. His life as well as his death is a miracle. His attraction to people is a miracle. The frequency of people’s visits to Annaya is a miracle. His miracles are miracles. Let’s read about them.
Sister Mary Abel Kamary
Sister Mary Abel Kamary, from Hammana, of the Two Sacred Hearts Nuns, entered the convent in 1929 and retained good health till 1936 when she was struck with severe pain in her stomach, thus vomiting whatever she ate. She was treated by many specialists in vain. They asserted the presence of an ulcer in the stomach. And the X-Rays showed that the pancreas, gall bladder and kidney were stuck to each other as if one lump, which hindered them from functioning. After she underwent a first operation and a second, which lasted for four hours, the results were unsatisfactory. From then on, pain augmented more and more for 14 years. Her body became so thin that she threw up whatever she ate. This resulted from the excruciating and acute pain in her bones.
The crises followed in different types : paralysis in her right arm, the need of a cane to walk, decaying of teeth…. Thus, death was inevitably near.
She was informed of Father Charbel’s miracles, so she went to ask his intercession. As a result, he appeared in her dream. He raised his arm and blessed her. She set off from Bikfaya to Annaya in the company of some nuns. She arrived at the monastery in a hopeless state. Then she was taken down to Father Charbel’s grave. No sooner had she touched the grave tile than she felt a current in her back. While she was praying near the coffin, the name of St Charbel appeared carved on the tile, wreathed with drops of glistening sweat. She wiped it with her scarf and then rubbed it on the afflicted area. Thus she got up and walked, which raised the shouts of joy for her recovery.
Eskandar Obeid
Eskandar Obeid, an ironmonger from Baabdat, lost his sight in one of his eyes as a result of an impact in 1937. He was treated by Doctor Naghrabieh without success. He, the doctor, recommended that the eye be removed to prevent the sound eye from getting affected.
Doctor Salhab referred him to the best specialists in Beirut. They also recommended the removal of the eye. This condition persisted till the appearance of St Charbel’s miracles in 1950. Eskandar waited for a sign to visit St Charbel’s tomb. During that time, he never stopped praying and receiving the Holy Communion till one night, St Charbel appeared in his dream and signalled him to go to the monastery.
He spent his day praying in the St Maron’s monastery and finally slept near the tomb. He started feeling pain in his eye, which was a signal of curing. Consequently, he went back to Baabdat with the ever increasing pain in his eye. This pain persisted until it got to an unbearable state. Finally, he slept for a while. During his sleep, he found himself near the St Mousa’s church door unloading a truck. Suddenly, the truck driver poked him in the affected eye with an iron rod. He woke up terrified. He also, for a second time in a dream, found himself next to a monk who was applying some detergent to his eye saying, ”You’ll feel agonizing pain, but you’ll be cured.” Then the monk disappeared. Eskandar looked and saw written on the floor, “Charbel, the Slave of God.” He gasped and woke up to cover his sound eye with a handkerchief. He clearly saw the displayed St Charbel’s photo with his previously defunct eye.
His and his wife’s shouts were raised due to the immense joy. The neighbours hurried to the scene and started chanting and singing hymns.
Mariam Awad
Mariam Assaf Awad was daughter to Lulu and Assaf, wife to Ibrahim Awad. Mariam was born in Shakra, Izra (in Syria) and lived in Hammana, Lebanon. Her husband had died 19 years previously. She had a son called Georgios, who is married and who is a Roman Catholic. He is illiterate, but he practices his religious duties in Hammana.
Mariam underwent three surgeries between 1963 and 1965. She was operated on once in the stomach and the second time in the intestine. The third one was on the right side of the neck.
All these cases were cancerous. The first was of Caccum cancer, which was removed. The second was cancer in the stomach, which started to spread according to the medical report. The third was in the tonsils. The doctor X-Rayed her whole mouth and took a sample for biopsy. He didn’t prescribe any treatment for this last disease. In this case, Mariam was doubtful of the nature of the disease. Since then, Mariam had started to pray to St Charbel.
The two tonsils were struck with cancer, which resulted in unbearable pain and difficulty in swallowing. In addition to this, her voice started to weaken. There was also redness in the tonsils, which grew to the size of walnuts. Mariam refused any treatment, including radiotherapy. Instead, she always asked St Charbel for either the cure for what she had been suffering from or the power to bear this disease. One day, while sitting in her bed, she prayed the following to St Charbel: “Provide me with the cure to this disease. You are the great saint who has cured the blind and the lame. When I recover from this illness, I’ll go to thank you in your shrine.” She asked for recovery in the evening and before retiring to bed. Next day, she was completely cured. When the lump started to disappear completely on the fourth day she was astonished with St Charbel. Not to mention the growths on her neck. The affected parts of her body no longer suffered pain. She became fully strong and sound. Then, Mariam came to pay her vow in the St Maron monastery, the tomb of St Charbel, thanking him for the cure he blessed her with.
Nohad El Chamy
My name is Nohad, spouse of Semaan el-Chamy, from Mezarib, Jbeil. I am 55 years old. I have 12 children (7 sons and 5 daughters). On the evening of the 9th of January 1993, I suffered from a left hemiplegia, affecting my leg, my arm and my mouth. Thus, I entered Saint Maritime Hospital in Jbeil.
Dr. Joseph Chamy, a cardiologist, received me and referred me to the Intensive Care Unit and to Dr. Antoine Nachakian and Dr. Majid Chamy, my family doctor. After many consultations, X-rays and medical tests, they deduced that the hemiplegia was due to the obstruction of 80% of the left-brain arteries and 70% of the right ones. “In this case, no treatment can cure you. Nevertheless, we still have the possibility to perform later a surgery and replace the obstructed arteries by plastic ones,” said the doctor. They advised me to go home and come back to Hotel Dieu Hospital within three months for new X-rays.
So, my eldest son, Saad, went to Annaya and brought me consecrated oil and soil from Saint Charbel’s tomb. When my daughter applied them on my body, I felt tingles in my hand and my foot. I left the hospital after staying there for 9 days.
At home, I couldn’t leave my bed. My husband had to help me go to the bathroom, and my children had to give me food and water through a straw. This is how I spent the next three days after leaving the hospital. While I was sleeping, I saw myself going up the stairs of the hermitage in Annaya and attending the mass in the presence of monks. During this mass, Saint Charbel was giving me the communion.
Between the fourth night at home, Thursday January 22nd, 1993, and early Friday morning, I was suffering from an awful headache and a pain in my right side. I started praying to the Holy Virgin and Saint Charbel, saying, “What have I done? Why have you done this to me? What sin have I committed to deserve all this? I have raised twelve children with lots of suffering, prayers and perseverance. I am not imposing my will on you, but if you are willing, you can heal me, or else take my soul. Whatever you decide to do pleases me.”
My husband and children left me to get some rest. At 11pm, I had a dream: I saw a blinding light filling my room, and two monks approaching my bed; one of them placed his hand on my neck and said, “I am here to operate on you.” I turned around but couldn’t see his face for a blinding light was coming out of his body and eyes. I said, “Father, why do you want to perform an operation? They didn’t say I require one.” He replied, “Yes you do. I am Father Charbel and come to perform it.” I turned too looked at the Virgin Mary’s statuette near my bed and said, “Virgin Mary, please intercede on my behalf. How are these monks going to perform a surgery and stitch the incision without an anesthetic?” I was staring at the statuette, which took a place between the two monks. At that moment, I felt an awful pain while Saint Charbel was rubbing my neck. When he finished the surgery, the other monk approached me holding a pillow, helped me to sit up straight, put the pillow behind my back and gave me the cup of water which was beside me, that after taking away the straw. He put his hand under my head and told me, “Drink this water”. I said, “Father, I cannot drink without a straw.” He replied, “We have performed the surgery and now you have to drink and walk, too.”
At that moment I woke up and realized that the water was going down my throat normally and I was sitting the way the monk made me sit. I looked at the statuette and noted that it was back in its original place on the table. Then, I felt a pain in my neck and unconsciously I touched it and realized that I could use my disabled arm, and that I can move my leg under the blanket. I got ot of bed, and without being fully conscious, I knelt before the Virgin’s statuette and Saint Charbel’s portrait to thank them. Then, I went to the bathroom, looked in the mirror, and saw two incisions in my neck; one on the left and the other on the right, each of approximately 12 cm. It was two o’clock in the morning when I went to my husband’s room, which was near mine, and switched the light on. My husband looked at me and said loudly, “How did you come here all by yourself? You might fall, and this would lead to another catastrophe!” I moved my hand and said, “Don’t worry. Saint Charbel operated on me. I can walk…”
The following day, in the morning, I went to the hermitage with my son and my husband to show my gratitude to Saint Charbel for his miraculous deed. When I came back home, all my friends and relatives, who used to visit me when I was disabled, were very surprised to see me able-bodied. News spread very quickly prompting visitors to come from Lebanon and abroad. A week later, upon the request of the priest of our Parish in Halat, Father Abdo Yaacoub, and of Doctor Majid Chami, I agreed to stay at my son’s house for a couple of days to get some rest. During the night, Saint Charbel came to me and said, “Don’t leave the people. Keep on your faith. I incised you through divine intervention so that people can see you. A lot of them have strayed from the Church. They are neglecting both to pray and respect the saints. You can’t do anything for the people. Those who want anything from me, I am Father Charbel, and I am always at the hermitage. I want you to visit the hermitage every 22nd day of the month, and attend the mass for the rest of your life.”
The following day, I woke up in the morning to find three stitches on the right side of my neck and two others on the left side. Doctor Majid Chamy took out two of them.
I started organizing a procession every Thursday (day of the miracle) at my house, in Halat. While I was in my village on the 15th of August, 1993, Saint Charbel came to me in my dreams and said, “Nouhad, I ask you to recite the Rosary in a gathering on the first Saturday of each month at your house.”
As usual, I woke up in the morning, took the incense to the small altar, lit the candle and started praying. I looked at the portrait of Saint Charbel to discover that it was secreting oil and still is to this day. On the 6th of November while we were reciting the Rosary in a gathering, as Saint Charbel asked me to, with a large number of visitors in my house, the portrait of Saint Maron started secreting oil and still does to this day.
On the 2nd of September, Saint Rita appeared to me in my dream in which I was praying in front of the shrine of the Virgin Mary next to my house in the village. She placed her hand on my shoulder, kissed my forehead, and said to me, “God bless you for your faith.” I turned around to tell her what had happened to me, but she interrupted, “I know. Saint Charbel has operated on you. The monk who gave you water to drink was Saint Maroun.”
Other graces and healings
Since 1950 and till present, the monks of Saint Maroun Monastery in Annaya, have not stopped registering the graces attributed to the intercession of Saint Charbel for the miracles he performed are countless and are preserved in the Monastery’s archives. However, it is impossible to mention all these numerous miracles, but we will tackle some of them and, thus, starting 2001.
It is worth mentioning that these miracles, which cover the whole world including the various believers (Christians, Muslim …), can’t be registered unless they were authentic and true.
Most of the healing cases are classified under incurable and malignant diseases and each way of healing differs from one case to another. There are those who were healed further to prayer, others further to blessed oil or incense, or by wearing the blessed belt or cassock, or by participating in the mass at the Saint’s tomb or at the hermitage or even reciting the novena.
However, these healings do not reach only bodies, but they rather include the souls corrupted by sins and misbehavior caused by their distance from God. Countless are the visitors who repented and got back to the way that leads to God after visiting the Monastery of Saint Maroun or Sts Peter and Paul Hermitage.
As for the common link between all these healings, it can be summarized by the faith in the intercession of Saint Sharbel to Jesus Christ, son of the Living God who is able to perform all kind of miracles.
